Heineken Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2015 April by Kunbi Collection - BellaNaija - October 20150028Kunbi Oyelese of April by Kunbi is a Nigerian womenswear designer the African fashion scene has come to know and adore for her fun, flirty, sexy and stand out pieces in her bridal and ready-to-wear collections.

Yesterday, as the Heineken Lagos Fashion & Design Week for 2015 drew to a close, the designer showcased her collection for Spring/Summer 2015 – “InTuxicated“.

It was a stellar collection with key April by Kunbi aesthetics that her fans have come to love and yearn for. The collection had a series of 3 colour sets – white, black and red. Each piece that came down the runway had lovely embellishments in floral patterns, plunging necklines, mesh detailing, lace coverings, flowing trains & capes and more.

We especially love the end of the presentation where the closing model’s dress doubles as lingerie – very handy for your wedding day. There nothing we don’t love about this collection!

Music Meets Runway 2015 - BellaNaija - November 2015001The highly anticipated Music Meets Runway 2015 is about to go down! You can look forward to a combination of fashion and entertainment on Tuesday 22nd December 2015 at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos Nigeria. And guess what? They are looking for the stars of tomorrow. This could be your shot at achieving your dreams.

The Rising Icon and Face of MMR competitions are run by the MMR Foundation – a charitable foundation which aims at supporting and empowering emerging talent across the arts, through the provision of grants for young entrepreneurs and models, giving them more opportunities to break into this very challenging market.

Music Meets Runway 2015 - BellaNaija - November 2015

Run by Le Reve Events, the annual MMR celebration, which has been running since 2011, fuses the best of fashion and music in Africa, bringing together some of Africa’s finest creative artists and showcasing their talents to a huge audience.

Rising Icon
The Rising Icon competition gives emerging designers from Nigeria the opportunity to showcase their talents in a way that can benefit their careers by providing them with extra exposure and support.

First launched in 2013, with the help of sponsors Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc, a grant of 3 million Naira was given to the winner Olakunbi Oyelese (Creative Director, April by Kunbi).

Last year, Ogochukwu Akabogu (Creative Director, Lines by Chaab) won the competition. Ogochukwu received an all-expense paid trip to New York for an internship with a fashion house to gain further experience abroad.

Ogochukwu Akabogu (Creative Director, Lines by Chaab) – Rising Icon Winner 2014

She had this to say about her experience – “Winning the MMR Rising Icon competition gave me an indescribable experience. My status as a fashion designer has taken on a whole different and better level. The number of clients I’ve gotten since I won has escalated, the publicity has been awesome and the internship in New York is truly a great initiative. I can’t wait to put all my experience to good use getting back to Nigeria. Thank you MMR for giving young fashion designers like myself the opportunity to pursue my career in the fashion industry whole heartedly.

To enter the MMR Rising Icon competition, please follow the instructions below:

  • Send your application to Risingicon@musicmeetsrunway.com
  • Attach at least 4 professional photos of your designs & 1 photo of yourself.
  • Attach a mini biography of yourself and your brand.
  • The deadline for all applications is 30th of November 2015

Face of MMR
For the Face of MMR competition, the team scouts for a model through a public appeal. Winning the competition will help that person enhance their modelling career through becoming an MMR ambassador.

2012’s Face of MMR winner Nkem Okafor was the main model for all of the MMR 2013 campaign images, and the MMR Foundation sponsored her trip to the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week South Africa.

Face of Music Meets Runway 2015 - BellaNaija - November 2015

Nkem Okafor – Face of MMR 2012

Nkem says about the competition – “When I heard my name announced on stage, all I thought of was all my hard work and dedication has finally paid off. I tried not to cry but I did privately. Till today, this has been the best experience of my life. After the show, I did loads of interviews; my name and face were all around the country on billboards, blogs, magazines etc. My career skyrocketed; I was being called for shows everywhere, got booked for look books and several magazines. My career and my entire life changed after winning ‘The Face of MMR’. This gave me validation that I was in the right path with my career and this motivated me further to do more. Thank you MMR for believing in a small town girl and changing my life. I will be forever grateful.”

Last year, Nneka ‘Nikki’ Anyansi became the Face of MMR 2014. Nikki featured in all the MMR Africa campaign images. Since then, she has emerged as one of the top models in Nigeria.

Today, we have sexy singer – Niyola, in Nigerian fashion brand, April by Kunbi.

BN Collection to Closet Niyola in April by Kunbi - BellaNaija - December 2015005

The April by Kunbi design label is one of the go-to brands for signature, custom made pieces perfect for dominating the red carpet, wedding guest lists, your wedding day and the stage.

Created by designer, Olakunbi Oyelese, the brand is a favourite for the everyday Nigerian woman and female celebrities like Tiwa Savage, MoCheddah, Toke Makinwa, Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, Makida Moka, Bolanle Olukanni and many more.

A graduate from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, Kunbi dreamed of creating a brand that would bring forth the fun and youthfulness of fashion – and she’s achieved that dream. The brand is known for its show-stopping embellishments, lush fabrics, daring cuts and stand-out aura – all the things that make a great April by Kunbi piece.

The brand has showcased at a number of fashion events, including the Music Meets Runway events since inception, and most recently the Heineken Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2015. From what we’ve seen so far, each year brings a new era for the brand and we can’t wait to see what 2016 holds.

Yesterday, singer & EME’s 1st Lady Niyola rocked a signature piece from the fashion brand’s “InTuxicated” collection showcased at the #HeinekenLFDW2015, to the 2015 Corporate Elite event. The dress, a stunning black piece complete with mesh sleeves and collar, embellished bodice and frame-fitting silhouettes, looked marvelous on the star act with styling by Ngozi Zed-Eye.

We absolutely loved her look which was completed with her hair in a low ponytail and bold red lips. See more images of her with celeb friends and rocking the dress below;

See Olajumoke’s First-Ever Fashion Shoot! …for April by Kunbi

Olajumoke April by Kunbi 1We get to see the official photos from Olajumoke Orisaguna‘s first-ever fashion shoot. This past week, Frank Ugah photographed her for an April by Kunbi shoot. Many assumed that it was for a lookbook. However, the designer has revealed that it was indeed for her Valentine’s postcard.

The creative director of April by Kunbi, Olakunbi Oyelese also shed light on the story behind the shoot.

Olajumoke April by Kunbi 2

**
Jumoke giving face!!

For her first ever fashion shoot, she didn’t do badly at all! Thanks to Damilola from her agency @fewmodels for giving her tips on poses and expression. This is just the beginning. It’s no news that Olajumoke’s story literally broke the internet last week, and we were reminded about how amazing God’s grace is and that he’s still in the business of turning lives around and blessing us.

I’d wanted to do a Christmas postcard but my schedule last quarter of 2015 was beyond hectic (Not complaining o! Lol). So I decided to do a Valentine postcard instead…Not a lookbook/collection as a lot of blogs have reported. I mentioned in my post last week that I’ll definitely be booking her and I don’t regret it one bit! It was a pleasure working with her and seeing her transform, taking instructions, moving like she’s been doing it all her life….She’s a natural.

Olajumoke April by Kunbi 4Jumoke’s story has forced me to look closer at my surroundings. There’s absolutely no doubt she is blessed but there are a lot of Olajumokes around us…Hardworking and just want to feed and help their families. You might not be able to get that pepper seller a modeling contract, but the next time she says the price for her pepper is ₦100, please don’t price it to ₦30. I’ve been guilty of this, trust me. To think that someone around me works/walks in the sun all day and her profit at the end of the day is at most ₦500.

I’m happy to have offered Jumoke her first paying modeling job. May it be the beginning of an amazing career. She might not be a runway model but she’s perfect for print and editorial! May God help us all to make someone’s life easier, someone’s load a lot easier to carry. God bless you @TyBello for the reality check. Special thank you to @frankugahphotography you came through for me at such short notice and to @christinecreations!! Christine listened to my brief to the T. You are amazing!!! Happy Valentines Day to every single one of you! God bless you. Spread love not hate.

**

A powerful message from Olakunbi.

She also addressed the controversy regarding the makeup and styling of the shoot.

Olajumoke April by Kunbi 5

I normally wouldn’t comment on things like this…but To ALL the internet warriors that have criticized the makeup for this shoot (as seen on Jumoke’s page) …please NOTE that if Jumoke continues her career as a model, you will most likely not see her as the ‘bread seller’…she will work with a lot of designers with different ideas and looks for what story they are telling. She has to become a chameleon to project whatever she has been booked for. Makeup for photoshoot is usually more than the everyday ‘owambe’ face beat as it gets toned down with flash and lighting as seen in the finished photographs from @frankugahphotography. Enough of the “let her natural beauty show”, “use her natural hair”. @christinesignatures is an awesome, hardworking and dedicated make up artist. I am offended by the amount of hateful comments towards her and her craft. We need to learn to get our points across without been hateful. She followed the brief I gave her that was befitting to the story I was telling. Well done Christine! Jumoke looked amazing. #SpreadLoveNotHate #HappyValentinesDay

The gorgeous Ebele and her love, Emeka‘s wedding ceremony was filled with so many emotional moments. You are getting pretty excited, right?! The super cute thing about the couple is how they met and how Emeka described thought his bride was about five years older the very first day they met. Luckily for him, they are married now and that statement is now a funny thing to look back on.

Their traditional wedding was just as beautiful. They stylishly showed off the beauty of the Igbo traditional marriage. Ebele showed us that she is not the conventional bride, she totally brought in her personality and style to her first outfit for the day. The groom Emeka also looked great in his outfit for the day. The white wedding, the bride walked down in April by Kunbi dress and looked effortlessly beautiful. All in all, it was a beautiful ceremony captured by the talented Bedge Pictures.

Here’s a little backstory of how they met by the bride. For more awesome wedding contents and inspiration, visit www.bellanaijaweddings.com.

How We Met
By the bride, Ebele

The very first time I met Emeka, we were at my family house in Nigeria. Emeka had come around completely unplanned as he was accompanying my sister’s then-boyfriend. During the banter, I remember one of my sisters asked Emeka to guess our ages (bearing in mind I’m the youngest), this guy confidently promoted me to the oldest and added like decades on to my age lol (slight exaggeration – but definitely at least 5 years). Then he tried to convince me it was a compliment! It was pretty funny watching him trying to backtrack! To this day, I still like reminding him how he basically told me that I look old and wrinkly within moments of knowing me! Ever the smooth talker lmao. I still married him though, look at God, won’t He do it.

Even though it was a group setting, Emeka and I connected immediately. I vividly remember the feeling I got when he introduced himself for the first time and we shook hands and made eye contact.  I instinctively liked his vibe and I literally felt this energy between us. I liked how he was super authentic, down-to-earth, pure and quietly confident. He had no bravado, he was just super chill and funny. Our connection was easy. We shared the same silly sense of humor and love for all things music and creativity. We literally spent the whole evening laughing and playing around. He was interested in my art and I was fascinated by his architecture. He was surprised that even with my British-co accent I still knew more about Afro beats than him.

When I returned to the UK, Emeka added me on Facebook and we started messaging every day. Eventually, I gave him my number and we started talking every day on WhatsApp. We would literally speak for hours throughout the day and spend the whole evening discussing until the early hours of the morning. He became my best friend who I could talk to about anything. We would speak in the morning before work, on my way back from work and the evening before bed. On birthdays and our anniversaries, Emeka would send me gifts and special videos.

On his 34th birthday, I created a bucket list of 34 things we would do together and places we would see. One of them was swimming lessons, which we did together when I visited Abuja. At first, I wasn’t 100% sure about entering into the commitment, but my husband was patient, kind and steady. He always said he knew we were meant to be together. He never had a single doubt about our future together and never stopped taking the steps to give me the same confidence. One of the main things that really stood out to me about my now husband is how thoughtful he is. On the 14th of  March 2016, Emeka’s birthday, he chose to spend it with those in need and to bring his birthday cake to people who were lonely in the hospital. I remember thinking about how his kindness reminded me of my father and grandfather. I knew he was the kind of man I wanted to be with.

We got engaged January, 4th 2018 at a Waterfront Bar in Lagos, Nigeria. I had left Anambra State (where my family home is located) to go to Lagos and we had planned for Emeka to come with me. However, before I left Anambra, Emeka had told me he needed to rush back to Abuja for work at the last minute and could not come with me to Lagos. I was distraught because I thought I might not see him again before I returned to the UK. However, he was planning to propose and had planned a special surprise which he has communicated with one of my closest friends who is based in Lagos. On the evening of 4th of  January 2018, I was out at the Waterfront Bar with my friend, my sister and her partner. I didn’t know Emeka was coming.

So, when he arrived, I was completely surprised and emotional. Our favorite song at the time, John Legend ‘You and I’ was playing when he knelt down and asked me to be his wife. I couldn’t actually hear what he said because the music was so loud, and we were both nervous! But I saw the most perfect ring and his mouth moving, so I didn’t hesitate to say yes! I am generally quite indecisive but choosing to be Emeka’s wife was the easiest.
