Nigerian designer Olakunbi Oyelese of April by Kunbi launched the first retail space for the brand. The store which is located in Lekki, Lagos is the hub for all April by Kunbi goodies! Ready-to-wear clothing, accessories and for made-to-order pieces (as seen on celebrity clients Tiwa Savage and Mo’Cheddah), customers and prospective customers can drop by for the deluxe shopping experience.

Olakunbi Oyelese is a graduate of the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)  in New York. The April by Kunbi brand celebrates the fun and youthfulness of fashion. STV’s Entertainment Weekly TV presenter – Yvonne Ekwere  dishes out never before heard details about herself in this tell-all interview. When asked what makes her stand out, the 25 year old said “The fact that I am multi-talented, definitely. People know there is something else to me but they don’t know what it is. I am a singer, rapper, a TV presenter, an actress… I used to write poetry, though I don’t know if I could still do that. You could also say I am a model”.

The screen diva also speaks about growing up, her family, work, coping with the fame and the future. When it came to the topic called love, Yvonne who is currently in a relationship said her ideal man is someone spiritual ” I am a spiritual person as well. I am not a church going, tongue-speaking person but I have a spiritual side. So, he has to have that connection to God somehow”

Newly wedded West Bromwich Albion striker – Osaze Odemwingie, also makes the pages of the magazine. The soviet born Nigerian International footballer speaks to Urban Royale about his life, setbacks in the past and his strings of successes. When asked to talk about himself, the ever smiley Super Eagles said “Uhm.. I would say that I am stubborn, headstrong….an easy flow but not simplistic” I guess fair play and team play has always been my style! I am always humble, friendly and straight but I can be stubborn when not understood and taken for a ride”. He also called Kanu Nwankwo his hero after Nigeria won the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

Rivers state born former Miss Nigeria UK – Dabota Lawson reveals exclusively to Nuella Iyoha, her budget beauty secrets. The 25 year old said due to her acne prone sensitive skin, she simple uses face wipes to help her remove water proof mascara and eyeliners without irritating her skin. Port Harcourt born model, actor and recording artiste – Alex Ekubo is Urban Royale’s 2nd edition Style Star. The mag gives us detailed analysis of his education. He went to Federal Government College, Kaduna for his secondary education and gained a diploma in Mass Communication from Calabar Polytechnic and went on to improve himself by studying Law at the University of Calabar. Speaking on his style, the model whose mother – Jane Ekubo is a fashion designer based in Lagos and designed Kanu Nwankwo wife’s (Amarachi) traditional wedding dress said “Growing up, I’ve always been conscious of how I looked and was raised to know that your appearance in public and how people perceive you means a lot, so I always try to keep it together”

In 2011, our beloved BellaNaija.com turned 5! It was a landmark anniversary and we decided to do something special that would resonate for years to come.

The team got thinking, and we decided to involve a talented group of recently emerging fashion brands – Obsidian, April by Kunbi, Toju Foyeh, Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Phunk Afrique, House of Nwocha, Meena and Akpos Okudu to help tell the BellaNaija story.

There are two major angles to the BN story; the first looks into the life of a young Nigerian student in Canada who observes a lack of home-grown content for Nigerians in Diaspora and decides to fill the gap. The other, focuses on the thousands of people who pay us a cherished visit daily, whom we attempt to entertain, enlighten, foster their engagement and connect with through our genuine love for “Naija”.

The designers were given the creative licence to come up with their representations of BellaNaija.com, “What comes to mind when you think BellaNaija?” I remember asking a few to spur their depictions towards the right direction.

I received each design with a twinkle in my eye; the designers demonstrated how with a common inspiration a range of expressions can emerge. All were unique, greatly different from the other, yet astutely captured the BellaNaija spirit in one descriptive form or the other.

“I see BellaNaija as a young, exciting, refreshing and strong brand. It is the first among its equals – it is practically royalty! We created this piece to reflect these qualities” said Ejiro Amos Tafiri.

Speaking on her design, Akpos Okudu said, “When I think of BellaNaija, I think of youth and exuberance. I think of the joy of life, particularly Nigerian life. It’s about the goodness in life and all things positive. These themes align perfectly with my design”.

The designs were one piece to the puzzle, there was still a shoot to organise, plus all the elements that go with it (Hair, Make-up, Photographer, Stylist & Model). In light of this, we put together a team of creatives whom we thoroughly believed would give us the results we wanted – A Great Campaign!

We got a stellar team on board: Stylist – Ezinne Chinkata; Make-Up connoisseur – Banke Meshida- Lawal; Photographer – Moussa Moussa; Hair Stylist – Ola Garuba; Model – Dorothy Chizoba Alieze of BETH Models;  and yours’ truly Ijeoma Ndekwu (assisted by Nkechi Eze) was the Creative Director ensuring that in all the creativity the BN voice remained as relayed by the designers.

BN Founder, Uche Pedro wanted to celebrate the inspiring journey through an Ad Campaign that showcased the individual elements that constitute BN. In 2012, in collaboration with Copy & Art Director – Osione Itegboje and Project Manager Dammie Amolegbe; we took the photos from our photoshoot and created an ad campaign that we are so excited to share with you.

What was important for us in creating our Ad Campaign was that, we wanted to deplete BellaNaija of our own meanings and associations. The way an idea is conceived and perceived by its creator is not necessarily the way it is received, and rather than focus on our perceptions, we wanted the Ad Campaign to reflect our readers, our stakeholders’ perspectives on BellaNaija.com.

I have always thought of BellaNaija.com as a mixed bag of treats with each treat as delightful as the next. Our readers visit BN for a variety of reasons; to get the red carpet scoop on an event, to be inspired by what a fellow Nigerian is doing with his/her life, to get tips for their wedding , to be updated with current news, to be entertained by our readers comments (LOL) the list goes on… The designers’ depictions capture the BN variety, the distinct partitions comprised in one huge vision.

The BellaNaija.com experience is not contained in a “totality”, it is not restricted to engaging with all its individual elements; it is essentially embedded in every variety the site offers. In that way, with every visit, irrespective of the reason behind that visit, you are locked in the BN experience.

The Ad Campaign adequately captures the unique yet unequivocally whole BN experience. I believe it was a job well done! Do you? Please share you thoughts.

On Monday 24th December 2012, the 2012 edition of Music Meets Runway, will take place at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos in style. Just before the event, the organizers have released the names of the 9 designers who will showcase their most creative pieces on the D-Day.

According to the rep, the 10th designer showcase will come from one of Nigeria’s established design labels, who will be headlining the runway – the name will officially be released closer to the date.

Tolani Nkili Onajide of NKILI
NKILI, meaning “Seeing Beautiful Things”, is a women’s luxury shirt-making brand focused on bringing light to the traditionally neglected yet single most important garment in a wardrobe, the shirt. Each piece goes on a journey, from design and print to production, nurtured by the highly skilled production team in Scotland. American celebrity, Angela Simmons has been spotted wearing the NKILI Tattoo Shirt and British singer, Lianne La Havas performed in the black NKILI butterfly shirt on her world tour.
Creative Director, Tolani Nkili Onajide was raised in Lagos, London and Oxford. She studied Architecture at the Architectural Association School or Architecture, London and University of Dundee School of Architecture, Scotland. She won awards, investments and grants for NKILI from business organisations; Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust, Starter for 6 and University of Dundee Enterprise Gym. 19 year old Dumebi Iyamah is the founder and designer of the Andrea Iyamah brand founded in March 2011. Acknowledging her talent at an early stage of 12 years old, the designer developed tailoring skills acquired through lessons that assisted her in completing the first few creations of the Andrea Iyamah brand.

According to a source, Ohimai Atafo will select the King and Queen of the black ball from the black carpet. Speaking to BN on the event, Adebola Williams, the Managing Editor of Y! Magazine says “Expect to see some of Nigeria’s best loved designers. Bridget Awosika, Toju Foyeh, April by Kunbi, Jewel by Lisa, Kinabuti, Zizi Cardow, Marayah O, Purple, Akpos Okudo, Tiannah’s Styling, Wana Sambo and more. This should be fun”

Also at the event, the re-modelled Y! Magazine will be presented to the public – with the first-of-its-kind cover identity as well as content re-energised for its audience. The annual Y! Best Dressed List, which will profile 20 young celebrities who ho define Nigeria’s style zeitgeist, will be unveiled.

On Monday 24th December 2012 – Koko master, D’banj and Tanzanian model, Millen Magesse hosted the 2nd edition of the annual fashion and music event, Music Meets Runway at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Yes, we loved the fashion presentations and musical performances by Wizkid, Naeto C, Burna Boy, Iyanya and more but it was the different fashion choices by the hosts that got us really excited.

Styled by Celebrity Stylist, Bolaji Animashaun, Millen kicked off her 6 wardrobe changes looking sassy in a floor length Moofa pink dress. She finished her look with a sleek up do and diamond earrings. Bachelor star D’banj also brought his A-game in a black suit with sequin details on the blazer. And yes wearing his signature sun glasses.

Later in the night, D’banj changed into a traditional outfit and a shirt with jeans while Millen wore a sequined April by Kunbi red dress with a high slit, a red Re Bahia mini, a sequined black dress with a sweet heart neckline by Andrea Iyamah, a satin blue Bridget Awosika outfit and a satin peplum top with a pink skirt by Shakara Couture.

Yesterday Thursday 7th February 2013, international make-up brand M.A.C Cosmetics officially launched in Lagos with a party at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Celebrities including Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha, Uti Nwachukwu, Yvonne “Vixen” Ekwere, ChiDynma, Alex Ekubo, Dolapo Oni, Eku Edewor, Olisa Adibua, Praiz, Munachi Abii and Hauwa Mukan were spotted at the event but it was the glam fashion choices that has us really excited.

Newly engaged Nigerian chanteuse Tiwa Savage heat up the scene at the launch of M.A.C Cosmetics.

The 33 year old performed her singles “Kele Kele Love” and “Ife Wa Gbona” in a mauve-coloured Hervé Léger by Max Azria spring 2012 bandage dress. She accessorized the frock which features a plunging neckline and metal details with diamond encrusted earrings, a pair of nude Valentino Rockstud Slingback sandals and of course her engagement ring.

Smoky eyes, a red pout and sleek hair completed her look.

Mo’Cheddah in April by Kunbi
Mo’Cheddah has been MIA for a while at red carpet and social events but boy did she make a comeback in an April by Kunbi halter neck midi white dress with lace detail on the back.

The songstress kept her look simple with her short bob – which seems to be her new signature hairstyle – pink lips, a diamond ring and a pair of white sandals with spike metals on the back.

She 41 and fabulous. Nollywood star Kate Henshaw showed off her banging body at the official launch of M.A.C Cosmetics.

The Meeting actress who also hosted the event rocked a head-to-toe edgy black ensemble. She paired her lace jacket with a black camisole, electric black high waist leggings and black sandals. Her statement black, red and gold necklace completed the look.

She finished her look with smoky eyes, a red pout and nails and an up-do.

Ok, we are having a déjà vu moment right now. Reason? Ene Maya Lawani rocked a green striped Louise Goldin spring 2011 dress which has been worn by two international stars – Rihanna and Katy Perry (in different colours)

The long sleeve dress with sheer detail on the arms and legs worn by the former beauty queen was accessorized with chandelier earrings, diamond rings and a silver clutch.

She finished her look with red lips and a pixie hair cut. She also rocked the same $895 Valentino Rockstud Slingback as Tiwa Savage but in black.

Nigerian designer Ugonna Omeruo was also present at the launch of M.A.C Cosmetics in Lagos.

The creative director of House of Nwocha wore a green lace dress by her design label. She accentuated her figure with a silver belt and accessorized with diamond rings and earrings, a black python clutch and a pair of white strap heels.

Her wavy locks swept to the side complimented her luscious nude pout.

28 year old media personality Toke Makinwa was also one to watch out for at the official launch of M.A.C Cosmetics.

Hitting the scene in a print House of Marie dress with a side fringe, the VHS presenter let her locks down for the event. Her dressed displayed at the 2012 MTN Lagos Fashion & Design Week was accessorized with silver earrings, a silver ball ring, a sequined clutch and a pair of blue spiked pumps.

It seems the pink pout was a trend at the event as Toke Makinwa also opted for the famous colour.

On Wednesday 13th February 2013, Michelle Bello’s anticipated romantic movie Flower Girl starring Damilola Adegbite, Chuks Chukwujekwu, Chris Attoh, Eku Edewor, Bikiya Graham-Douglas, Teni Aofiyebi, Tosan Edremoda, Jude Orhorha,Ahide Adum,  Ijeoma Grace Agu, Angela Adiele and Patrick Doyle premiered in floral style at the Silverbird Cinemas, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Silverbird Galleria was transformed beautifully into a perfect venue for the world premiere of “Flower Girl”. The uber stylish scene adorned with roses and petals and lots of red layouts was in line with the romantic movie and the Valentine’s Day celebration.

Guests spotted at the premiere include Elohor Aisien, Tiwa Savage, Gbenro Ajibade, Lynxxx, Toke Makinwa, DJ Caise, Thelma Ojiji, Karen Young, Osas Ighodaro, OC Ukeje, Kemi “Lala” Akindoju, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Oreka Godis as well as Michelle Bello’s parents. The movie was co-produced by Michelle Dede who was also at the event.

We have to say that we were totally impressed by the organization of the premiere! Kudos to No Surprises Event Architects! Decor was by Newton and David.

The 85th Annual Academy awards may have brought the world together in February, but the inaugural edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards united movie lovers across Africa like never before on Saturday 9th March 2013.

Hosted by Nigerian radio personality/BBA Host IK Osakioduwa and Zimbabwean TV star Vimbai Mutinhiri, the star studded awards ceremony took place in grand style at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

I’m sure by now, You’ve seen the highly awaited 1000th episode of Nigeria’s most successful soap opera, “Tinsel”. To commemorate the big feat, they have organized a huge celebratory ceremony at the Eko Convention centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

With Praiz being the voice behind the show’s new theme song, we’re not surprised he’s billed to perform at the event. The event which is taking place tonight 23rd May, 2013, has so far seen special guests including Eku Edewor, Toke Makinwa, IK Osakioduwa and Susan Peters with more still on the way.

It’s a sequined red carpet battle on this edition of BN Pick Your Fave.

Nollywood starlet Beverly Naya and Nigerian TV personality Yvonne “Vixen” Ekwere are going head-to-head for your best in a green long sleeve dress from April by Kunbi. These two stars styled the red carpet stunner from the Nigerian fashion label in their own unique ways.

This dress made its red carpet debut at the Lagos Premiere of Weekend Getaway in April 2013. Beverly who starred alongside Ramsey Nouah, Genevieve Nnaji, Uti Nwachukwu, Monalisa Chinda, Ini Edo and Bryan Okwara in the movie, sizzled at the event in the dress which features a plunging neckline.

With her hair swept up into a chignon, Beverly opted for highlighted eyebrows, red nail polish and red lipstick. She accessorized the piece with emerald drop earrings and a gold clutch.

To host the maiden edition of the Butterscotch Evenings Show with American comedian Bill Bellamy, Yvonne “Vixen” Ekwere arrived in the same outfit. The event took place on Friday 17th May 2013 at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Victoria Island with stars including Waje, Praiz, Rita Dominic and Johnny Gill in attendance.

She accentuated her figure with a gold belt and accessorized with gold rings and gold drop earrings. She completed her look with wavy locks and pink lipstick.

BN Style stars, it’s time for another edition of BN Red Carpet Fab!

Women need one another and once in a while, it is important they get together to celebrate themselves. That was the aim of the Women Celebrating Women Conference on Saturday 15th June 2013 at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Although some gentlemen including Praiz, Jay Jay Okocha, Efe Tommy and Musa Danjuma were in attendance, it was the women that stole the show in their stylish outfits.

American singer/TV host Dionne Warwick as well as Tiwa Savage, Waje, Toolz, Caroline Danjuma, Toke Makinwa, Niyola, Justina, Yemi Alade, Tomi Odunsi, Chee, Seyi Shay, Osas Ighodaro and Yvonne “Vixen” Ekewere were all invited to the event.

Fashion icon Coco Chanel said ” A girl should be two things – Classy and Fabulous” and since it was an event celebrating women, take a look at what they wore.

Rising singer Tonye Garrick chose a polka dot wrap dress for the event. With her hair swept to her left shoulder, she accessorized with a red necklace, gold earrings, gold bracelets, a black clutch and pink sandals.

There were lots of smiles on the red carpet and TV personality Stephanie Coker‘s wasn’t one to miss. Draped in a black paisley knee length dress with extra blue fabric, she accessorized with gold stud earrings, a gold necklace and black strap heels.

It’s Toolz. The Nigerian media personality wasn’t one to miss at the Women Celebrating Women conference in a light blue chiffon dress. With her dark locks cascading down her shoulders, she styled the dress with drop earrings, a white belt to accentuate her figure, pink sandals and a yellow clutch.

Was it the dress, her smile or the red carpet diva attitude? Either way, she was one of the best looks at the event.

Rita Dominic arrived at the Ebony Life TV launch yellow carpet in one of her best looks yet.

Away from all the dramatic frocks, Rita took a simple approach in white and black. Opting for a tousled up do, smoky eyes and nude lipstick, she styled her one shoulder white top and black pencil skirt with a black belt, silver drop earrings, a silver bracelet, a sparkly clutch and black sandals.

OC Ukeje looked sharp at the Ebony Life TV launch on Sunday in black and white.

He styled his white double breasted blazer with a white-and-black polka dot shirt, a black satin tie, black pants, a silver wrist watch and black shoes.

I was really excited to see Nkiru Anumudu at the launch of the Ebony Life TV on Sunday evening, because she always serves some of the best red carpet looks.

And this was no different. Nkiru who posed with her daughter Zina (in a sexy cut-out black dress) chose a white-and-black checkered dress from Marc Jacobs‘ Spring /Summer 2013 collection.

The beautiful high neck piece which features a sheer skirt, was styled with a white-and-black clutch, a gold wrist watch and white heels. Smoky eyes, nude lipstick and wavy blonde locks finished the look.

When you co-host an event, you’ve got to dish out more fashion fabulousity. Well Dolapo gave us two more looks.

I think this was my favourite look of her at the event. She changed into a pretty black-and-white Ms Makor dress, which features a flared skirt. Still keeping her hair and make-up the same, the look was completed with red heels.

Her third and final look of the night was a canary yellow dress.

The dress which features a plunging neckline, covered by a sheer fabric, was accessorized with gold hoop earrings, a selection of gold bracelets and an eye catching pair of gold shoes.

We are not used to seeing Dolapo in pieces like this  – as she often takes a demure approach, so I am glad she shocked us with the dress.

Genevieve Nnaji‘s dramatic Deola Sagoe frock was definitely worth a Kodak moment on Sunday evening.

The Nollywood star who opted for a sleek chignon and red lipstick, styled the lace dress which features a sheer skirt and an alluring train, with silver earrings, a silver clutch and black pumps.

If you’ve got a body like this, there is surely no crime in flaunting it.

Nollywood starlet Beverly Naya left little to the imagination in a black dress by April by Kunbi. The sequined dress which features a see-through sheer detail from the hip bone and a peekaboo cut on the back, was styled with diamond encrusted earrings and ring as well as a pair of black pumps.

It was Mo Abudu‘s big night – and prior to the event, I anticipated she was going to choose not 1, not 2 but at least 3 gorgeous dresses.

But Mo shocked all by choosing an embellished Deola Sagoe green pant suit through out the event. She styled the outfit which features lace detailing, with silver drop earrings.

She chose a one shoulder satin blouse and metallic skirt with a thigh high slit. She accessorized with feather earrings, a gold bracelet, an ivory clutch and black shoes.

I am a tad bit disappointed that Kate didn’t opt for another pair of shoes. A metallic heel or gold sandals would have sold this look very well, but seeing her in that outfit, I doubt if anyone will concentrate on the shoes.

Zaina isn’t the first to be seen in this dress. In March 2013, Biola Alabi wore the same dress to the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

She chose a pink blazer and a pink long shirt from her collection displayed at the 2012 MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week. She accessorized with gold earrings, a gold bracelet, a black clutch and a pair of black heels.
